Difference Between Capstan and Turret Lathe Machine [Notes & PDF]

The main difference between the capstan and turret lathe machine is the capstan lathe is fast because of light construction but the turret lathe is slow (rigid construction).

Capstan and Turret Lathe is one of the types of Lathe machines. These machines are used for mass production.

You can also study different parts of the Lathe Machine in detail.

Approximately more than 15 points here to understand you in simple and understandable words.

Before moving to know the differences, let’s have an overview of Capstan and Turret Lathe Machine a little bit.

Capstan Lathe Machine:

This is one of the different types of lathe Machines. It is an advancement of an Engine lathe. In an Engine lathe, we perform operations individually but in a capstan lathe, we can perform the operation more than one at a time.

It is a light-duty machine and is used for a small type of workpiece. This is similar to a turret lathe machine.

Turret Lathe Machine:

Even Turret Lathe Machine is too advanced of Engine lathe machine. Same here number of operations can perform at a time.

These machines are used for large types of production work or batch production. This is a heavy-duty machine and is used for a large type of workpiece. I have explained the differences between them in detail.

This is a picture of a capstan and the turret lathe machine.

Now differences in detail:

Difference Between Capstan and Turret Lathe Machine:

The following 17 Point is the Difference Between Capstan and Turret Lathe Machine:

Sl No.Capstan Lathe MachineTurret Lathe Machine
1.Capstan lathe is a light-duty machine and This is a heavy-duty machine.
2.In capstan Lathe, the tool head is mounted in ram and the ram is mounted on the saddle. The tool head is mounted on the saddle.
3.To provide feed in this ram movement is required. Here to provide feed saddle movement is required.
4.This is used for small type workpieces because here ram movement is limitedand This one is used for larger workpieces because here ram movement is not limited or fixed.
5.This is a fast type of working because of light construction. This is a slow type of machine.
6.A heavy cut can not be achieved here because of non-rigid construction. In Turret lathe, Heavy cut can not be achieved here because of having a rigid construction.
7.It is a kind of horizontal lathe. But this one works both horizontal and vertical type work.
8.The turret head can not move crosswise. Here the turret head can move crosswise.
9.In a capstan lathe easy to move the turret head as its slides over the ram. It is difficult to move the turret head along with the saddle
10.To hold the workpiece the collect is used. Here to hold the workpiece jaw chuck is used.
11.This machine can be machining the workpiece up to diameter 60mm only but This machine can be machining the workpiece up to a diameter of 60mm only.
12.The lengthwise movement of this lathe machine is less. Here it’s more.
13.Turret’s head can move manually. Turret’s head can not move manually.
14.Only a limited amount of feed and depth of cut so Machining can not be achieved as much as can achieve in turret lathe.Machining can be more by providing more feed and depth of cut.
15.Lighter in construction.Heavy in construction.
16.Here no such facility having like turret lathe. In turret lathe has the facility of moving the turret at the right angle to the lathe axis.
17.Both are suitable for mass production. Both are suitable for mass production.
